Student workshops

The Personal Development Workshops are the key component of The Academy, and are designed to prepare our youth for high school success, manhood, and college access. Additionally, ALP engages the young men with discussion about politics, popular culture, and current events. Below are titles and brief descriptions of some of the monthly ALP workshops:

Building Academic Success
The purpose of the workshop is to discuss study strategies and the mindset needed to succeed academically.

Developing Communication Skills
The purpose of the workshop is for students to learn how to effectively communicate with various groups of people, including friend, teachers, and parents.

Understanding Stereotypes, Bias, and Prejudice
The purpose of the workshops is to teach and discuss concepts of identity, bias, and stereotypes, and how they play into the daily lives of young men.

Strategies to Resolve Conflict
The purpose of the workshop is to examine and discuss strategies to resolve conflict that provide the best chance for positive and productive outcomes.

Understanding Manhood
The purpose of the workshop is to discuss what characteristics are commonly found in responsible men.

Substance Abuse
The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the reasons why young people abuse drugs and encourage them to find healthy and positive alternatives to drug use.  

Goal Setting
The purpose of the workshop is to help student create S.M.A.R.T. goals for the lives.
